FROM THE BOOK
Rohan (horse-land): Originally the Gondorian province of Calenardhon, the land north of the White Mountains was gifted by Steward Cirion to Eorl of the Northmen in 2510 (Third Age). Eorl had led his men through great hardship from the far north to the aid of Gondor, and Cirion gave him the wide green lands of Calenardhon in recognition of his aid, swearing eternal friendship between old Gondor and the new land of Rohan.
A reasonably remote location, it’s simple enough to find, and can easily be seen as the area in the film. The entire valley was used for locations.
Poolburn, which was the little village attacked in the TT, is at the end of the a long series of dirt roads, often quick rocky. Don’t be afraid to open the odd gate enroute, just make sure to close them behind you (this is grazing country).
The little village looks more like a fishing holiday camp. The buildings, which were disguised for filming, are a bit run down. The location is easy to spot and recognisable from the film though.
